About this app

EarthTurn South is a world clock watch face for Wear OS that puts Australia up front: the whole earth seen from below the South Pole, built for the Samsung Galaxy Watch. Most world maps squeeze Australia into a bottom corner. Here Antarctica sits in the centre, and Australia, New Zealand, South America and Africa spread around it, with the north stretched out towards the rim.

The map is drawn in the style of an old atlas and turns clockwise once a day, exactly as the earth does seen from the south. The sun stays at the top, so noon is always up and midnight always down, and a ring of 24-hour numerals runs round the rim in the same direction as an ordinary clock: wherever a city points, that is its hour.

Day and night are painted where they really fall, with the real twilight band, and the shape changes through the year: in December Antarctica is lit around the clock, in June it sits in polar night. A dashed line marks the International Date Line along its real bends past the Chatham Islands, Tonga, Samoa and Kiribati, and fine red slashes, with a +1d or -1d beside the line, mark the part of the world that is on a different date from you.

On the day of a total or annular solar eclipse the shadow's path is drawn across the map, and the shadow crosses it during the eclipse (2027 to 2035), including the total eclipse of 22 July 2028, whose path runs right over Sydney.

Your local time and date are written large across the top, and a short red bar on the rim marks your own hour. One or two places of your choice sit at the bottom, each as its hour with a +30m or +1d marker when it applies, over its name. Each is also a dot on the map in its own colour, cyan or orange like its name, so you can see where it is and whether it is in daylight. Out of the box: Buenos Aires and Los Angeles, with your home dot in Sydney.

Settings, all on the watch (hold the face, tap Customize):
• Map style: vintage atlas or dark; the dark map is also what you see in always-on mode
• Zone 1 and Zone 2: off, or any of 72 time zones, every inhabited one on Earth, with Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Eucla and Lord Howe Island each listed
• Home: your own place, a white dot on the map. While you choose it in Customize, its code (SYD, PER, MEL) shows in red beside 100%; on the face it shows whenever the battery is full
• Date change: red slashes and the +1d label, slashes only, or the line only

Your own time zone is never a setting: it follows the watch. Daylight saving changes on its own, per zone, through 2036, so Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide change their clocks while Brisbane and Perth stay put. The battery appears under the date only at 100% or at 15% and below.

Prefer the world from the top? EarthTurn, the same face seen from above the North Pole, is on Google Play too.

EarthTurn South is built in the Watch Face Format: no phone app, no account, no network access, and no data collected. Coastlines and ice shelves from Natural Earth, public domain.

Requires Wear OS 6 or later. Tested on the Galaxy Watch 7. One-off purchase, no subscription.
