About this app

Edo Karakuri II is the second bench in the same workshop. Where the first laid a wooden movement on a field of timber, this one sinks it under a ring of black urushi that runs all the way out to the case, and gives it a tourbillon and a pump that will not sit still.

⚙️ FIVE WHEELS, FIVE RATES
The great wooden wheel at ten turns slowly. A spoked brass wheel at the centre runs twice as fast the other way, with two smaller cogs faster again above and below it. No two wheels on this dial run at the same rate, because two wheels moving together read as one printed picture sliding rather than as a mechanism.

🔧 A PISTON THAT PUMPS
On the right, the barrel is held at neither end by its own weight. It is guided above by a fixed finial and below by a clamped rod, and it slides between them once every two seconds: the stem above it shortens as the rod below it lengthens, the way a real pump breathes.

🌀 THE TOURBILLON
At seven, the carriage sits in its own wooden ring with its hairspring coiled at the centre, cradled by the plate around it.

🌸 BLACK URUSHI AND APPLIED GOLD
The chapter ring is black lacquer carrying a full minute track, closed by a gold hairline at each edge. Twelve applied gold batons stand on it, each seated on the exact hour. Inside, the timber is split by a karakuri swirl with maki-e sakura laid into the lacquer.

📅 DAY AND DATE
An aperture cut under twelve carries the weekday and the date, rimmed with the same bevel as the centre cap and floored with the plate's own lacquer. Switch it off and the plate closes over it.

⌚ TWO DATA WELLS, YOUR SIZE
Two wells counterbored into the plate show steps and heart rate by default, and can be changed to other information you prefer. Choose Large, Medium, Small, or off — turning them off takes the wells away and leaves the bare movement. Anything that carries a range brings a gauge with it, drawn as a filled arc against its own unlit track.

🎨 THREE TIMBER FINISHES
Rosewood, ebony and mulberry relight the plate, its wheels and its bridges together.

🪙 THREE HAND METALS
Gold, silver and copper. Gold as it leaves the box, to match the plate's own applied batons and brass; silver stands furthest from the timber if you would rather the hands were the first thing you saw.

🕐 A SWEEPING SECOND
A slender second hand with a sakura counterweight sweeps the dial. Switch it off if you prefer stillness.

🌙 AMBIENT MODE
Optimised for always-on display. The plate and every moving part drop away, leaving the dial's own gold batons and the hands on black to preserve battery.
