Kozakura Japanese Watch Face

Kozakura takes its name from the leather it is made of. Kozakura-gawa is deerskin dyed deep indigo and printed with a komon of small white cherry blossoms, and for centuries it was what Japanese armour was faced and laced with — a whole field of spring worn into battle. This face is one round panel of it, worn and creased, with three gilt washers set into the hide.

🌸 THE LEATHER IS THE DIAL
Nothing here is drawn on top of a background. The blossoms are resist-dyed into the hide, so they stay cream when the dye beneath them changes. The creases, the stain at four o'clock and the stitched repair patch at ten are part of the panel, not decoration added to it.

🕐 A CLOCK WHERE THE PATTERN STOPS
Between the upper and lower fields of blossoms the komon simply stops and leaves a wide band of plain leather across the middle. The hour and minute sit in that band at their largest — this face does not clear a space for the time, it uses one the leather already had.

📅 MONTH AND DAY, WEEKDAY AND SECONDS
Two small stacks ride the ends of that same band: the month with the date beneath it on the left, the weekday with the seconds beneath it on the right. Each can be switched off on its own.

⌚ THREE DATA SLOTS WITH GOAL RINGS
The three gilt washers are three data slots, showing battery, steps and heart rate by default and changeable to other information you prefer. Any source that carries a target — a battery level, an exercise goal, a step goal — draws a ring inside its own washer, so progress is read from the shape and not only from the number.

✨ A LIGHT THAT RUNS THE RIM
A highlight travels the gilt edge of the panel, one full lap every minute, so the seconds can be read without looking at a digit. It is a separate layer, so switching it off really removes it.

🎨 FOUR LEATHER DYES
Ai indigo, fusube smoked brown, kurenai crimson and moegi spring green — the colours armour leather was actually finished in. Only the dye moves: the blossoms and the gilt stay exactly as they are, which is what real resist-dyed leather does when it is dyed another colour.

🪙 THREE INLAYS
Kin gold, shiro blossom white and gin silver. One choice drives the time, the calendar, the seconds, the slot values and the goal rings together, the way one craftsman would have cut them all.

🌙 AMBIENT MODE
Optimised for always-on display. The leather drops away and leaves the rim, the three washers and the time on black to preserve battery.
