Eclipse Watch Face

A solar eclipse that tells the time: the sun turns behind the moon to give the minutes, and the hours turn on the moon in front of it.

The sun fills the middle of the face, an enamel dial shading from bright at the centre to deep at its edge, with its minute scale printed in worn black ink and a pale band round it ticked for every minute, the even minutes printed like a bezel. A glowing corona spreads past the band. The sun turns one minute every minute, so the current minute always stands at the pointer at three o'clock, its large numerals staying upright as they pass. A black moon sits just left of centre, leaving a bright crescent on the right and a thin ring of corona round the rest, and casts a soft shadow onto the sun.

On the moon the hour ring turns the same way. The current hour stands large at three o'clock, right beside the minute, so the time reads along one line, and the hours before and after it fade away up and down the ring. Neither ring sweeps: the sun steps on the minute and the hours step on the hour.

Two large gauges run round the edge of the screen, one on the left and one on the right, each filling from the bottom up with a scale every ten percent and its icon at the top end. You choose what each one shows. Two readings sit on the moon, heart rate and steps by default, also your choice. The weekday, day and month are at the top, and the current temperature with a weather icon, or the watch battery, at the bottom.

Always-on keeps the hour and the whole minute dial, every tick and every five-minute numeral, turned to the current minute, in dim colour on black.

SETTINGS

Left gauge and right gauge: steps toward your daily goal, battery, chance of rain or UV index. Steps on the left and battery on the right by default.

Centre top reading and centre bottom reading: heart rate, steps, battery, notifications, chance of rain or UV index.

Bottom reading: temperature or battery.

Sun colour: orange, monochrome green, indiglo teal, sunburst yellow, tactical red or military olive. The gauges and icons follow it.

Text shade: white, light grey, silver, grey or dark grey.

Temperature units: follow your phone, Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Time format follows your watch's own 12/24-hour setting. Weather readings need weather on your watch; until it arrives they show dashes.
